We’ve all heard the saying Home is where the heart is but is that true?
Our home is a place where we spend so much of our time, where we unwind and relax; a place where we create memories, and a place where we find comfort and safety. So for a lot of us the answer is yes, Home is where the heart is. This is why it makes so much sense for us to live in homes that makes us happy, that make us feel good, and that reflect who we are.
Living in a home that makes you happy can have a positive impact on your mental health. It’s no secret that your environment can affect your mood, and if you’re surrounded by clutter, disorganization, or a space that doesn’t reflect your style or personality, it can lead to stress and anxiety.
Your home should reflect who you are. It should create a sense of comfort and safety. It’s a place where you can express yourself, showcase your personality, and create a space that aligns with who you are. It’s a place where you should feel most comfortable and safe – a place where you can let your guard down and be yourself.
When you live in a home that makes you happy, it shows that you value yourself and your well-being. It creates a sense of comfort and safety, allowing you to relax and recharge. Living in a home that makes you happy can truly improve your quality of life. When you are surrounded by things you love, whether it’s artwork, furniture, or decor, it can bring joy and happiness into your life. In addition, if you live in a home that’s functional and organized, it can lead to better productivity and less stress.
So, if you’re not currently living in a home that makes you happy, it’s time to start making changes to create a home that aligns with who you are and brings joy and happiness into your life.
So how do you do that?
Here are my top suggestions for creating a home that you love.
KEEP ON TOP OF CLUTTER
- If you don’t need, want or use it, donate it
- Be consistent. If you see it pick it up
- Ask for or enlist help
Clutter is something that can truly affect how you feel about your home. If you see things that you view as clutter it creates unnecessary stress – the whole “I’m not on top of things” kind of feeling. It can be overwhelming.

To get on top of it, start small, be consistent, and don’t be afraid to ask for or enlist help. Other members of your household should take equal ownership to stay on top of clutter, and if it’s within your means, hiring a cleaning service can be another good way to help you stay on top of clutter without being overwhelmed by it. Donate what you don’t need, want, or use – otherwise the accumulation of these unnecessary items can mean there’s just more “stuff” to clean or clean around.
DON’T KEEP THINGS OUT OF OBLIGATION
We’ve all been there: someone gives you a gift that that you don’t really like and you feel obligated to have it in your home. What happens then is when you see it you don’t feel happy, you don’t feel good – you only feel that sense of obligation. If you must keep something in your home that you don’t really want, try to keep it somewhere that you won’t have to see it often. It’s important to keep this in mind when giving someone else a gift too. You don’t want to put them in the position of having to display something that they don’t love.
BE KIND TO YOURSELF
This one is so important in so many ways but here I’m talking specifically about creating a home that you love. Be kind to yourself, do your best and know that you are doing what you can to create the home you love. Creating a space that you love can take time and persistence, so be patient with yourself and with the process.
FOLLOW YOUR HEART INSTEAD OF TRENDS
If trends truly make you happy then follow them, but keep in mind that oftentimes we get caught up in things we see the most – in feeling like we have to have certain things in our home to be happy. We put importance on things like how others will view our home. But the problem with that is that your home is not about other people or their opinions – it’s about having a place that is a reflection of you. It’s not about keeping up with or re-creating what we see in others’ homes.
OPEN WINDOWS
Fresh air is so important to the health of your home. Being closed up inside your home is unavoidable at certain times of year, but when you can, open the windows and let the fresh air in!
LET THE SUN SHINE IN
Sunlight can greatly affect your mood. Letting the light shine in can warm cold spots, help plants grow and make you feel better in your home.
DECORATE YOUR HOME WITH THINGS THAT YOU LOVE
When you surround yourself with things that you love, you create a positive energy in your home. Things you love make you feel good. They might also remind you of someone that you love. Even if it’s unconscious, surrounding yourself with things that you love makes you feel better in your space.
KEEP THINGS THAT YOU LOVE WHERE YOU CAN SEE THEM
This is especially important in a room that you spend the most time in. By making sure that the things you love are within view in a space, you improve the energy of your home, especially in that room.
ARRANGE FURNITURE IN A WAY THAT ENERGY CAN EASILY FLOW
Energy is so important. It is everywhere and it is everything. In your home you want energy to easily flow. The best way to do this is to arrange furniture in a way that doesn’t block the flow. For example, keep space under items like beds, and keep areas clear of clutter to ensure the free flow of energy in your home.
CREATE AN ENTRANCE THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY
According to Feng Shui, the main entrance to your home is one of the most important areas to look to invite good energy into your home. Here are some tips to create an entrance that helps to set the tone for your experience of your home:
- Keep entrance clear of clutter
- Make sure nothing is blocking the walkway and entrance
- Make sure everything is clean
- Paint the front door a colour that makes you happy
- Make the entrance welcoming

Not only is it important for energy to easily flow within your home, how you feel when you walk in is also very important. The energy that you bring into the home stays in the home, so cultivating ways to ensure that you feel good when you walk into your home is especially important.
Living in a home that makes you happy is essential for your overall well-being. Your home can truly have a positive impact on your mental health, serve as a reflection of who you are, create a sense of comfort and safety, and improve your quality of life. Follow these tips to help create a home you love and remember to be kind to yourself, start small, and know that your home is about you and your family. No one else.
