If summer heat is getting you down, check out this recipe from the New York Times for Gazpacho (they call it Best Gazpacho to be exact, so you know it has to be good!). Gazpacho is a chilled tomato soup that originated in Seville, Spain. This version from the NYTimes has tomato, cucumber, pepper, and onion – the key to getting the perfect velvety smooth texture is to slowly drizzle the olive oil to facilitate the emulsifying process, and then to run the mixture through a food mill or strainer before serving.

It might seem like an odd choice to recommend a book called Wintering in the heat of midsummer, but Katherine May’s beautiful book by that name is a must-read any time of year. May writes about how difficult times send us into a winter-like state of seclusion and uncertainty, and tells of her own experience wintering after a sudden illness in her family. She examines the process of wintering in nature, and the healing restorative power of the cycles of seasons, and she sees the rest and retreat that we all enter into in our own seasons of wintering as offering the same kind of transformational benefits.

We’re enjoying Somebody Somewhere, an HBO show inspired by the life of comedian and singer Bridget Everett. Everett stars in the series as Sam, a woman in midlife struggling with grief and acceptance in her tiny hometown in Kansas. Singing helps lead her on a journey of self-discovery, and along the way she finds company in other outsiders who – like her – don’t fit in to the mold. In Canada, you can check out Somebody Somewhere on Crave.
